Hailed by the New York Times as “stunningly virtuosic” and “memorable”, pianist Sandra Gu is a versatile performers known for her dynamic interpretation of new music while bringing a fresh and insightful approach to established repertoire.
 
Ms. Gu has performed in recitals across the U.S.  Recent highlights include performances in Tanglewood’s centennial celebration of Elliot Carter’s music, solo appearances with the Contemporary Music Ensemble at Northwestern University, collaboration with the Mark Morris Dance Group, as well as guest artist appearances in Dal Niente and the inaugural Summer Chamber Music Festival at the University of Arkansas.
 
 
An avid proponent of contemporary music, Ms. Gu has worked with composers such as Jason Eckardt, Oliver Knussen, William McKinley, Shulamit Ran, and Charles Wuorinen.  Her passion for discovering new music has led to frequent collaborations with composers of her own generation and numerous world premieres.  In 2009, Ms. Gu founded the New Spectrum Ensemble, a Bay Area chamber music group whose mission is to bridge the gap between contemporary music and standard classical repertoire through innovative programming and presentation.

Ms. Gu is a laureate in competitions including the Iowa International Piano Competition, the Arthur Dann Piano Competition, International Young Artist Piano Competition Featuring Chinese Music, Northwestern University Concerto Competition, Manhattan School of Music Concerto Competition, and the Young Artist Annual Award Competition.  She is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the Hoversen Award in Piano from Northwestern University, Dean’s Talent Award from Oberlin College, and the Henry Kohn Memorial Award from Tanglewood.

A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Oberlin College, and Northwestern University, her principal teachers include Lucy Tan, Joseph Schwartz, Sanford Margolis, and Ursula Oppens.  She has also received coaching and played in master classes for Emanuel Ax, Claude Frank, Richard Goode, James Levine, Jerome Lowenthal, Garrick Ohlsson, Ivo Pogorelich, Rita Sloan, and Nelita True.  Ms. Gu holds a doctoral degree from Northwestern University.
